What is synergistic dominance?

Synergistic dominance occurs when a muscle that is prime mover for a particular movement becomes weak or inhibited, leading other muscles to compensate or take over its role. This compensation can lead to inefficiency in movement patterns and potentially result in injury.

For example, if the gluteus maximus is weak or inhibited, the hamstrings and lower back muscles may begin to compensate by taking on some its roles during activities such as squatting or lunging. This can put increased strain on these compensating muscles and lead to issues such as lower back pain or hamstring strains.

Addressing synergistic dominance typically involves identifying and addressing the underlying cause of muscle weakness or inhibition through corrective exercises, stretching, and strengthening. By restoring proper function and activation of the prime mover muscles, individuals can improve movement efficiency, reduce compensations, and decrease the risk of injury.
